Haiti is an island nation located in the Caribbean. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the neighboring Dominican Republic. Haiti is one of the most densely populated and poorest countries in the world. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Though much of Haiti’s terrain is unsuitable for farming, most Haitians are subsistence farmers who cultivate small plots of land around their mud-and-thatch homes. This is further complicated by years of deforestation and a mountain terrain. From a plane flying above the country a ring of topsoil due to erosion is visible in the ocean surrounding the island. The language widely spoken in Haiti is Haitian Creole (a mixture of French and West African dialect), but their official language is French which is only spoken by those with a proper education. Voodoo is the official religion of Haiti, and a strong Catholic influence is also found in the country. Haiti is a country afflicted with poverty, disease, and natural disasters.
